Liposuction

If you have localized areas of fat that resist good lifestyle practices, you may be interested in liposuction. Many people find that there is at least one area of their body with stubborn fat. This stubborn fat persists even when we diet and work out. Plastic surgeon Dr. Delio Ortegon of San Antonio can perform liposuction to target and remove stubborn fat.

Choosing Liposuction: Who's a Good Fit?

Men and women who have a stable body weight and localized fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise may with to consider liposuction. Liposuction can remove fat from certain areas of the body—liposuction should not be used as a tool for significant weight loss. Liposuction, or lipoplasty, is the surgical removal of fat. Liposuction can remove fat where other methods have failed.

Benefits of liposuction include:

  • targeted removal of stubborn fat,
  • improved contours in the body, and
  • improved proportions of the body.

The best candidates for liposuction are healthy non-smokers who are not obese. The best results are achieved when the patient is in good health, but desires body-slimming in specific areas that don't respond to diet or exercise.

Liposuction in San Antonio: What to Expect

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Liposuction is a multi-step process. First, the area being treated is infused with tumescent fluid. This fluid helps keep the proper balance of fluid in the area, since some fluids are removed along with fat. Then, small incisions are made, so that Dr. Ortegon can access the targeted fat. The doctor uses a thin tube to suction fat out of the area being treated. After the proper amount of fat is removed, you will have your small incisions closed.

Lipo Recovery and Results

Following liposuction, you will need to rest and wear special compression garments that minimize swelling and promote skin contraction. You may need to care for your stitches and surgical drains. During a follow up visit soon after surgery, your drains and stitches will be removed. Swelling and bruising is common, but these are temporary side effects. As the swelling subsides, you should see results of your liposuction procedure.

As long as your weight remains stable, your liposuction results should be long lasting. Fat will not return to the treated area after surgery. However, liposuction does not remove all fat cells from the area, so it is possible to regain weight. For optimum results, you must maintain a good diet and rigorous exercise regimen.
