Tram Flap Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery is performed on women who have had a breast removed. If you have undergone a mastectomy, you may be facing choices about your breast reconstruction. Dr. Delio Ortegon of San Antonio is committed to providing options for breast reconstruction.

In the event of mastectomy or lumpectomy, you can choose to have reconstruction with saline implants or silicone implants. If you do not want a breast augmentation using implants, you may want to consider a TRAM Flap Breast Reconstruction.

Choosing TRAM Flap Breast Reconstruction: Who's a Good Fit?

Dr. Ortegon performs TRAM flap breast reconstruction for women who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy in the San Antonio area. Patients usually select TRAM flap breast reconstruction:

  • after mastectomy,
  • as an alternative to a breast implant,
  • for reconstruction of one breast or both breasts.

For many women, the greatest benefit of choosing a TRAM flap breast reconstruction is that the tissue used to replace your breast comes from your abdomen. No artificial breast implant will be used during your procedure.

TRAM Flap Breast Reconstruction In San Antonio

Like all breast reconstruction methods, TRAM can be conducted immediately after mastectomy or at a later time. Dr. Ortegon performs TRAM flap breast reconstruction under general anesthesia. During surgery, an incision is made to remove a portion of your abdominal wall muscle, which contains veins that provide a blood supply to the new breast. Skin, fat and muscle is relocated to the chest wall to reconstruct the removed breast(s).

Results And Recovery

Recovery for a TRAM flap breast reconstruction is typically longer than a breast reconstruction using implants. You will experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for 6-8 weeks after reconstruction. There will also be discomfort in your abdomen and breast. Dr. Ortegon will give you a complete set of instructions about returning to work and normal activities after a breast reconstruction.
