Microdermabrasion

While no magic wand exists to wave away skin issues like a dull complexion or sun damage, microdermabrasion in San Antonio is a prime alternative. Austin area plastic surgeon Dr. Delio Ortegon’s practice offers microdermabrasion treatments to remedy many superficial skin problems.

Microdermabrasion is a hugely popular clinical exfoliation technique—it was performed more than 800,000 times in the US in 2010, according to the ASPS. While it is not technically a magic wand, this simple and safe treatment can quickly improve the appearance and condition of your skin with very little risk and no downtime. This dramatic improvement is achieved by using a handpiece that passes over your skin and buffs away dead, dull surface cells—what remains is your healthy, glowing skin below.

What Does Microdermabrasion Remedy?

Much like a chemical peel, microdermabrasion removes the top layers of skin that are dead and therefore lack the luster and vibrancy of fresh skin cells. This treatment can work to treat or greatly diminish the following over time:

  • Sun damage
  • Uneven skin texture or dull skin
  • Oily or thick skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores

What Is the Microdermabrasion Treatment?

It is important to note that when beginning a microdermabrasion treatment, more than one session may be necessary to achieve your desired result. A more mild or infrequent treatment will yield a mild result.

When you begin your treatment, no anesthetic will be necessary. The process is comfortable for most patients and many just feel a light pulling on the surface of their skin. During treatment, a handpiece will be gently pulled across the surface of your skin. Your skin will be pulled into the handpiece and small crystals will be sprayed across it. These crystals give a gentle abrasion to your skin, sloughing off dead skin cells. The handpiece will then suction up the crystals and removed skin cells, leaving clean skin behind.

Microdermabrasion Treatment Aftercare

Following your microdermabrasion treatment, you can return to your normal routine immediately, though you may be advised to avoid prolonged sun exposure and to wear an SPF to protect your skin. Side effects from microdermabrasion are usually mild and may include some hyperpigmentation or light bruising from the suction handpiece. These will diminish shortly.
