Facial aging has been a longstanding concern among men and women of a certain age. Today, we have ways to slow the development of lines and wrinkles – several of them. Still, there comes a point at which most people reach a crossroads. This point may come sooner than you would imagine. At San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery, patients as young as their 40s are inquiring about facelift surgery. This is not uncommon, nor is it premature. The thing about aging is that we all respond differently. Because of that, we all need a choice in how we refresh our unique facial structure.
To Fill or not to Fill
Recently, there has been a major shift in the way that facial aging is managed. Because we have the option to fill lines and creases with biocompatible solutions, this is what many of us do. Common products used to minimize (or erase) certain signs of aging include Botox, which smoothes lines on the forehead and around the eyes, and Juvederm products, which restore volume to the cheeks and other areas of the face.
The fact that dermal fillers and Botox are a common way to restore volume and rejuvenate the face does not mean that this approach is always best, or that injectable solutions are an alternative to facelift surgery for every patient.
There are Limitations
While it would be nice to be able to resolve the various consequences of facial aging with non-surgical therapies, this isn't always possible. Sometimes, skin laxity surpasses the capability of a filler product. Trying to accomplish a substantial lift with fillers alone could lead to overuse. Too much product in any one area could lead to a “stiff” appearance. The idea behind facial rejuvenation is to restore a natural appearance of youthfulness, not to alter the structure of the face so severely that authenticity is lost.
The Modern Day Facelift
Historically, the concern about facelift surgery has been that the tightening of skin and tissue over the skeletal structure of the face would only increase the appearance of age due to sharp angles and hollows in certain places. Today, surgical facial rejuvenation usually involves the restoration of volume, as well. This may be done with fat from the patient's body, or with fillers.
