Laser Hair RemovalSan Antonio, TX

The laser specialists at our San Antonio Med Spa use precisely calibrated laser energy devices to remove excess hair and pigmentation on all areas of the face and body. Using the latest laser technology from industry leader, Candela, they swiftly remove unwanted hair and melanin deposits without the discomfort and lengthy procedure time associated with older laser devices or the pain of other hair removal options like waxing.

The Gentle Pro Laser system made by Candela delivers an effective and trusted laser hair removal treatment. Gentle Pro utilizes dual-wavelength laser technology with powerful lasers to lessen treatment time and improve results.

The laser selectively targets the pigment in the hair follicles, causing damage to it (but not the surrounding skin), so the follicle can no longer produce hair in the same way it did before.

The Alexandrite laser is great for use on lighter skin tones, while the Nd:YAG laser is effective on all skin tones and is ideal for our San Antonio laser hair removal patients who have sun spots, tanned skin, or spend a lot of time in the sun. The longer wavelength is less disruptive to the outer layer of skin. This decreases the chance of unwanted changes in skin pigmentation due to treatment and creates beautifully smooth results.

A single zap of a laser is not enough to get rid of hair permanently. Hair grows and sheds in cycles. Each hair may be in either the anagen, catagen, or telogen stage at any given time.

  • Anagen: Active growth
  • Catagen: Transitional stage
  • Telogen: Resting stage

Laser hair removal targets the hair while it is in the anagen, or active growth phase. During this stage, the hair can absorb the laser emitted by the device, which then damages the hair follicle to prevent the hair from growing back as usual.

To remove all the hair in one area requires repeated exposure to the laser, usually over a period of several months, to ensure the laser targets the hair in the active growth stage. Full laser hair removal treatment for an area usually requires between 4-8 visits. After which, touch-ups may be done for continued benefits.

Many people grow tired of constant shaving, tweezing, depilatory treatments, and salon waxing. These hair removal solutions are temporary and require constant upkeep.

Furthermore, they can be costly, inconvenient, and at times, painful. Some individuals also experience skin irritation and ingrown hairs, making it impossible to feel confident once the hair is gone. Here are just a few benefits of laser hair removal over traditional methods of getting rid of unwanted hair:

  • Laser hair removal is ideal for those who desire a more long-lasting solution. Damaging the hair follicle significantly reduces hair growth. Damaging the hair follicle significantly reduces hair growth.
  • For ideal candidates, studies have shown that laser hair removal is about 75-90% effective at permanently reducing the amount of hair in an area that’s been treated correctly. Any hair that does grow back is noticeably thinner and less visible.
  • Since laser hair removal involves minimal upkeep, it is possible to go months or even years without pesky hair growth detracting from your overall appearance.
  • Any hair that does grow back will be noticeably finer and sparser.

The laser technicians at San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery’s Med Spa can remove unwanted hair on all areas of the face and body, including your arms, back, chest, stomach, legs, and bikini area. Small areas such as the fingers, toes, chin, cheeks, and upper lip also respond well to laser treatments.

Fair-skinned individuals with dark hair tend to see faster results than those with darker complexions or blond hair. However, the cutting-edge laser devices at San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery are capable of treating practically all skin tones and shades of hair. Here are some other reasons you may be a good candidate:

  • You want a clean bikini line without the pain of waxing.
  • You’re tired of shaving your armpits.
  • You have hair in visible areas that you don’t want, like between the eyebrows (unibrow), the upper lip and chin, or other areas where you feel hair shouldn’t be coming in.
  • You have fast-growing hair and find yourself having to shave and wax more frequently than you’d like.

Pregnant and lactating women should avoid laser hair removal.

Unlike other hair removal methods, it is not necessary to allow hair in the treatment area to grow out prior to treatment. In fact, shorter hair is ideal because it allows the heat to travel to the root of the hair follicle more efficiently. To prepare for your laser hair removal San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery advises that you avoid any kind of waxing or plucking for six weeks before treatment. You should shave the treatment area a day or so before your appointment. Please arrive for treatment without any makeup, lotions, oils, or other products applied to the treatment area.

When you arrive for your laser hair removal treatment, your skin will be cleaned and a topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area by one of our trusted practitioners. After the anesthetic has taken effect, your treatment will begin. You will also be provided with protective eyewear. When treatment begins, the Gentle Pro Dynamic Cooling Device will dispense a cooling spray which will further minimize discomfort. The feeling during treatment can be compared to the snap of a rubber band.

Treatment typically lasts between 10 minutes and one hour depending on the size of the area being treated. Treatment on the back typically takes around 30 minutes, legs will be slightly less, and smaller areas such as the bikini area will only take about 10 minutes. Hair removal treatment with the Gentle Pro system requires four to ten total treatments per area, spaced one to two months apart.

There is no downtime associated with Gentle Pro Laser Hair Removal treatment. Makeup and skincare products should not be used for 24 hours after treatment. Patients should avoid any hair removal at the follicle for at least two weeks following treatment. Examples of such treatments are waxing, threading, tweezing, or electrolysis. Patients should also avoid sun exposure for four weeks, and abrasive cleansers until the skin is healed. Patients may notice continued hair growth in the treatment area, but these hairs will shed and growth will stop completely within two to three weeks.

Laser hair removal patients may experience some redness or swelling following treatment, but these side effects should resolve within a few days. Ice may be used every hour for the first 6 to 12 hours to reduce discomfort. It is possible to experience some changes in pigmentation in the treated area. Sun exposure may worsen this condition and should be avoided for 4 weeks following treatment. Scarring is also possible, though an extremely rare occurrence. Adherence to proper post-procedure care can prevent scarring and other complications.

The Gentle Pro Laser system not only effectively removes unwanted hair, but can also be used to remove pigmented skin lesions such as freckles, age spots, and sunspots. One of the biggest advantages to the Gentle Pro treatment for pigmented skin lesions is that the treatment is not likely to disrupt the pigmentation of the skin beneath.

The treatment procedure for skin lesions is similar to treatment for hair removal. A topical anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area and allowed to take effect. The time it takes for treatment will vary on the size of the area receiving treatment. 75% of skin lesions are usually removed in the first session, with the rest removed during a second treatment one to two months later.

After treatment, skin lesions in the treated area will appear darker for a week or two. The brown spots will peel off as the area heals, and certain areas such as the chest will generally take longer to heal than the face. Lesions may reappear over time, but regrowth is a long process and lesions can be re-treated if necessary.
