Cosmetic Ear Surgery
What Is Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)?
Ear pinning surgery, or otoplasty, is used to correct prominent or protruding ears. While there is no medical reason to have this procedure, protruding ears have long been a source of insecurity for some. The look of smaller ears is achieved by removing a portion of the cartilage, as well as the use of permanent sutures to position the ears closer to the head.
Otoplasty is one of many rewarding procedures performed here at San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery. During a consultation at our San Antonio plastic surgery practice, Dr. Ortegon will explain the details of otoplasty including risks, costs, and benefits.
Who is a Good Candidate for Ear Surgery?
Otoplasty can be a good solution for individuals who suffer from prominent ears. Most patients considering this procedure are feeling self-conscious about the degree in which one’s ears protrude, child or adult. However, in order to have this procedure, your ears must be fully developed. For children, this means they must be over the age of four.
Either local, intravenous or general anesthesia may be used for otoplasty. This will depend on the preference of the individual and Dr. Ortegon’s recommendation based on the amount of correction needed.
Dr. Ortegon will make an incision at the back of the ear in order to reduce enlarged cartilage and to create the fold located just inside the rim of the ear. If an incision at the front of the ear is necessary, he will place them in the folds of the ear so that they are not visible. Next, he will place sutures internally to hold the newly shaped cartilage in place, and to keep the ear lying closer to the head.
To finish, external stitches are placed in order to close the incisions. Dr. Ortegon individualizes each procedure, taking care to not disturb the surrounding structures, resulting in a seamless, natural result.
Ear Surgery Results
The results of your ear surgery will be visible as soon as the dressings used to protect the ear during recovery are removed. With more subtle-looking ears, you can enjoy better self-confidence.
For children receiving this procedure, most are able to return back to school within one week after surgery. As for adults, many patients can return to work after five days. Directly after surgery, your head will be wrapped in a bandage to protect and promote healing. After a few days, this dressing is switched out for a lighter bandage. Dr. Ortegon will provide you with instructions on how to care for the bandages. Any non-permanent sutures used during surgery will be removed within one week.
