Cosmetic Ear Surgery
Ear pinning surgery, or otoplasty, is used to correct prominent or protruding ears. During surgery, over-sized ears are made smaller by removing a portion of the cartilage, which pins the ears back with permanent sutures so they lie closer to the head.
Otoplasty is one of many rewarding procedures performed by one of our plastic surgeons of San Antonio Cosmetic Surgery. During a consultation at our San Antonio plastic surgery practice, the doctor can explain the details of otoplasty including risks, costs, and benefits.
Choosing Ear Surgery in San Antonio: Who’s a Good Fit?
Otoplasty can be a good solution for individuals who suffer from prominent ears. Most patients considering this procedure:
- Have experienced teasing about their ears
- Are interested in normalizing their appearance
- Are between 4-14 years old, with fully developed ears
While the procedure is often performed for children, adults can benefit as well.
Your Ear Surgery in San Antonio
Either local, intravenous or general anesthesia may be used for otoplasty depending on the preference of the individual and our plastic surgeon’s recommendation.
Dr. Ortegon will make an incision at the back of the ear in order to reduce enlarged cartilage, and to increase or create the fold located just inside the rim of the ear. If an incision at the front of the ear is necessary, he will place them in the folds of the ear so that they are not visible. Next, he will place sutures internally to hold the newly shaped cartilage in place, and to keep the ears lying closer to the head.
Finally, external stitches are placed in order to close the incision. Dr. Ortegon individualizes each procedure, taking care not to distort other structures that could result in an unnatural appearance.
Cosmetic Ear Surgery Results
The results of your ear surgery will be visible as soon as the dressings used to support the ear during recovery are removed. With more natural looking ears, you can enjoy better self confidence.
Most kids are able to return back to school within one week after surgery, and many adults return to work after five days. Directly after surgery your head will be wrapped in a bandage to promote healing which, after a few days, is switched out for a light head dressing. Please be sure to consult with Dr. Ortegon on instructions for how to care for the bandages. Any stitches that were used during surgery will be removed within one week.
