Our medical aesthetician Lizette Ritchie is an expert in IPL photofacial, which is designed to quickly and painlessly address common signs of aging and also help revitalize your youthful appearance.
Aging is a natural process. However, common signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, or uneven skin tone can make you look older than your actual age. In some people, the signs of aging can appear prematurely due to factors such as stress, unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking, or unhealthy eating habits. Environmental factors such as sun exposure and pollution can also speed up the aging process of your facial skin. But you can now not only fight common signs of aging but even prevent the untimely appearance of wrinkles, age spots, and fine lines with advanced skin treatment options such as an intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial.
The procedure is often referred to as a photofacial, which uses an IPL to get rid of things like skin spots, spider veins, broken capillaries, redness, or rosacea.
It can also promote collagen and smooth the skin’s texture. The light waves target and damage hemoglobin or melanin cells to render them less visible through the skin. The process usually consists of several treatments and is noninvasive, meaning it can be a quick and easy way to improve your skin.
An IPL facial can prove to be highly effective in reducing and even preventing common signs of facial aging such as fine lines, age spots, uneven skin tone, and wrinkles. IPL can also be used to effectively treat other skin issues such as pigmentation, acne, freckles, as well as the appearance of blood vessels.
IPL photofacial performed by our aesthetic technicians is one of the most commonly sought after skin treatment procedures that patients opt for when they come to SACS. Our patients choose us for their IPL treatment not only because it is a highly effective skin treatment procedure or because SACS is an established name in offering a wide range of advanced plastic surgery procedures, but primarily because of their trust in Dr. Ortegon who is widely regarded as one of the leading names in plastic surgery procedures in San Antonio. Our growing family of happy and satisfied patients is tangible proof of the kind of trust our patients have on Dr. Ortegon and his staff. In fact, a substantial section of our new patients come to us because they were recommended to Dr. Ortegon by our previous patients.Meet Dr. Ortegon
After determining what areas you would like treated, your professional will cleanse the treatment areas and place a cooling gel over the skin to protect against heat. Your eyes will also be covered with eye shields to protect your vision from the light. A handheld IPL device will then be placed against the skin being treated and light pulses will target the blemished areas. There may be some discomfort similar to that of a rubber band snap, but otherwise very tolerable. Be sure to avoid any retinoids or blood-thinning medications.
The treated skin may be red with possible swelling after the procedure and feel similar to a sunburn, which usually subsides within a day if not within a couple of hours post-procedure. Dark spots may appear darker during the recovery period, crusting and shedding of crusted over pigmentation can be expected as the skin needs to shed resulting in healthier more even tone skin. Some skin conditions may take multiple treatments before significant results appear, and can often be treated in conjunction with a regimen of chemical peels.
Skin that is prone to flushing, redness, or hyperpigmentation can benefit most from this procedure. It can also treat several other skin problems anywhere on the body, including wrinkles, large pores, and sunspots. If your skin is darker or tanned you may not be a candidate for IPL.
Dr. Ortegon recommends that patients undergo 3-5 treatments for optimal results. Your IPL sessions will be spread out with each session scheduled after a minimum gap of 3 weeks.
No. There is absolutely no pain involved in this procedure as we use a cooling gel to protect the skin against heat. However, for patients who have sensitive skin, we can apply a topical anesthetic.
An IPL photofacial does not require any downtime or recovery period. You will, however, be advised to avoid any tanning and sun exposure 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
One IPL facial session typically takes around 15-30 minutes from start to finish.
The results can be immediately visible in some cases. However, the complete results of your IPL photofacial treatment will become more visible and prominent with each treatment session.
