The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), recently released the statistics for the cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that were performed in 2012.

14.6 million procedures, including minimally-invasive and surgical cosmetic procedures, were completed in the United States in 2012. This is a five percent rise from the amount done in 2011. Reconstructive plastic surgery also saw an increase of one percent to 5.6 million procedures completed in 2012.

“Our annual statistics serve as a snapshot regarding the plastic surgery industry,” stated the ASPS President Gregory Evans, MD, on the ASPS website. “For the third consecutive year, the overall growth in cosmetic surgery continues to be driven by a significant rise in minimally-invasive procedures, while surgical procedures remain relatively stable.”

Non-Invasive Cosmetic Procedures Had The Biggest Increase In 2012

The minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures saw a six percent rise, with 13 million procedures completed in 2012. Facial rejuvenation procedures experienced the most growth in 2012, with the most Botox and Dysport injections ever performed to date.

Along with the botulinum toxin type A injections, dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion fill out the top five minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures performed in 2012.

Cosmetic Breast Surgeries in 2012

“Female cosmetic breast surgeries such as breast augmentation, as well as body contouring procedures like tummy tucks, were some of the most popular procedures performed in 2012, although they saw declines,” continued Dr. Evans.

While breast augmentation tops the list as the most performed cosmetic plastic surgery procedure in 2012, the number of procedures decreased by seven percent when compared with the 2011 statistics.

Interestingly enough, gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, saw a five percent increase to nearly 21,000 procedures last year.
